CHAPTER TWENTY
“Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read.” -Groucho Marx, The Essential Groucho: Writings For By and About Groucho Marx
After Clint left, I sat there in the dark and thought about what had happened. I was in turmoil. I was thrilled that Clint had finally seen me as a woman, but now I wondered if I was just another one of his conquests. I had never seen Clint with a woman for more than just a few months. Was I just another notch on his gun belt? I was pretty inexperienced when it came to love. Most of what I knew about romance and sex came from the classic movies I watched. I had had only one serious boyfriend, Duncan, while I was in college. I had slept with him after dating him for the entire school year. He had dumped me when he returned home for summer break. Ever since then, I had been skittish about getting physical with a man. I guess I wanted the whole package. I wanted the romance, the starry skies and the gallantry. If I couldn't have it all, then I didn't want it.
I pulled on my chenille robe and walked to the kitchen. Watson heard and followed me. He looked up at me expectantly. "Sorry, Watson, but I don't have any puppy chow. I guess you could eat a little chicken though, couldn't you?" I grabbed some roast chicken out of the refrigerator. I put some on a plate and set it in the floor for him. I made myself a cup of lavender tea and then called Juliet. I needed advice.
"Oh my goddess! Do you realize what time it is?" Juliet groaned when she finally answered the phone. "Somebody better be bleeding or dead or I swear you will be!"
"I slept with Clint," I said.
"Holy cow! Ok. I will forgive you for waking me up." I could hear rustling through the phone line. "No, Wade, no one has died. It's just Phee. Go back to sleep. Hold on, Phee. Let me walk into the other room."
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to wake you, but I had to talk to someone," I apologized.
"It’s okay. I can talk now. What the heck? How did this happen? Rick is going to kill him!"
"Don't you dare tell Rick!" I admonished her. "Don't tell anyone. Not even Wade. It just kind of happened. One minute he was sitting next to me on the couch, and I was trying to tell him about clearing Charlie from our suspect list and the next minute we were in the bedroom."
"Where is he now?" Juliet asked.
"He got a phone call from Sheriff Dawes and had to leave," I told her. "I don't know, Juliet. What if I am just a one-night stand for him? You know how long I’ve waited for him to notice me. I don't want him to think I am just some cheap roll in the hay.
